Had a rare one this weekend. Bit of a breeze behind me on the way out and then again on the way back. Not exactly but as near enough to notice.

It was a great ride. I really enjoyed it. Best route I know from Chatham to Dover. Hilly country lanes through the Kent Downs all the way to Capel-le-Fern. Along the top of Abbots Cliffe then down to Dover. Bit of a climb up past the castle, through Deal, a quick stop at my sisters for tea and chat then onto the Viking Coastal Trail from Sandwich to Reculver.
Almost 100% traffic free cycle paths and promenades along that stretch. As close as you’ll get to the sea in this part of the world without getting wet. Cycling is prohibited along a good part of the way from 1 May to 30 September inclusive between the hours of 10am and 6pm. A week earlier and I’d have been walking attracting disapproving looks for a good few miles.
I enjoy riding through Whitstable and Faversham. Interesting towns to visit but also where I spent a few pre adolescent years and have more family I can drop in on for a catch up over a hot drink and quick bite to eat.
The bit around Sittingbourne was ugly and the last few miles through Medway made no sense. There are much better ways to go. I didn’t bother to check where RWGPS had sent me when I created the route. A few tweaks is all it will take to sort that mess out then all will be good.
If you fancy having a go at the ride, starting and ending near a train station in Chatham, Dover, Margate, Whitstable or Faversham is perfectly doable. I happily recommend it for a 200 DiY. Either way round. As long as it’s not too windy and at the right time of year.
